Episode 247 – My Name Is Tim

Posted on January 12, 2012

This Week: The void of wide screenings of new releases continues as Kevin tries to weather a winter cold which makes him sound husky and sexy like Demi Moore. He invites Tim Buel from The Golden Briefcase into the Magical Studio in the Sky to chat about gospel plays, 3D retro animation and Marky Mark and the Contraband Bunch. They look at the new movies, then chat about the insanity of The Devil Inside donkey punching the box office. Later, they lay down a Fat Guy Five about what old movies should get a retroactive 3D treatment. Then they give out some DVD recommendations and head back out into the frozen screening wasteland of winter.

Episode 246 – I Need Some Scratch

Posted on January 5, 2012

This Week: In the cold wasteland of January, Kevin invites Rudie Obias back into the Magical Studio in the Sky to talk about the end of 2011 and what to look forward to in 2012. They also look briefly at The Devil Inside, which wasn’t screened for press and represents the only new wide release this week (an honor that is shared with Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch from last year). Kevin and Rudie talk about their most anticipated films of 2012 and what they though worked in 2011. They also go blue in the third segment, talking about what they would be willing to do to make money in the new year. They also go over the recent box office numbers and lay down a Fat Guy Five about great exorcist moments in film. Finally, they chat about the new DVDs and Blu-rays for the week before heading back out into that cold wasteland of January films.

Episode 245 – The Big, Fat End of the Year Special

Posted on December 29, 2011

This Week: As 2011 comes to a close, Kevin invites The Idiot Boxers’ co-host Merrill Barr into the Magical Studio in the Sky to look at the best and worst films of the year. They also look at some of the new films this week, including the Christmas Day release of The Darkest Hour as well as the limited release films The Iron Lady, Albert Nobbs, Angels Crest, Pariah and A Separation. Then they talk about box office winners and predictions before Merrill gets alarmingly shrill at the topic of the DVD Round-up. Then the Fat Guys Network says good-bye to 2011 and hello to 2012.

Episode 244 – The Most Awkward Happy Meal Toy

Posted on December 21, 2011

This Week: Preparing for the long Christmas weekend, Kevin invites fellow critic and live-tweeter Mel Valentin into the Magical Studio in the Sky for an early episode. Together, they look at the 586 new releases this holiday week, including The Adventures of Tintin, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and War Horse. They also take a quick look at some of the award films in limited release before talking box office, examine the latest The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit trailers and answer some long-overdue listener feedback. After laying out a Fat Guy Five about English-language remakes, Kevin and Mel whip through the DVD Rundown and then sail away into the sunset.

Episode 243 – Getting Chip-Faced

Posted on December 15, 2011

This Week: As the holiday movie season swings into gear, Kevin invites Grae Drake from CNN, Movies.com and the Popcorn Mafia into the Magical Studio in the Sky to get chip-faced. They break down the new Sherlock Holmes movie before turning into chipmunks for the second segment. There, they give a squeaky-voiced review of the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie as well as the only non-sequel in wide release, Young Adult. In the infamous middle segment, they look at the Golden Globe-nominated Carnage before Grae totally geeks out over Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. They also talk about sundry things like the weirdest porn Kevin’s seen on the internet, why Muslim women shouldn’t handle a big studded cucumber and how award season is shaping up. It’s a classy show to say the least.

Episode 242 – Surprisingly Relevant and Respectful

Posted on December 8, 2011

This Week: Kevin invites Devindra Hardawar from Slashfilmcast into the Magical Studio in the Sky. In a strange twist of events, the conversation goes first into a discussion of technology, then into a uncharacteristically relevant and respectful talk about the movies of the week. Kevin and Devindra chat about the odd paths of David Gordon Green’s career with The Sitter and roll their eyes at New Year’s Eve. Then they lament Kevin not loving Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy before moving into the infamous (and unnaturally clean) middle segment to talk box office and answer a Facebook question. After laying out a Fat Guy Five, Kevin and Devindra rattle through the DVD Rundown and send the audience on its way into the great beyond.

Episode 241 – Cottage Cheese and Hairy Buttocks

Posted on December 1, 2011

This Week: In the wake of the holiday weekend, shopping stampedes and pepper sprayings at Wal-Mart, Kevin invites Jared Zimney from Movies in the Mancave back into the Magical Studio in the Sky. With no major wide releases opening in theaters this week, Kevin and Jared chat about some of the limited releases and award films, including The Descendants, Marsha Marsha Marsha and Shame. Later in the show, Kevin extols the virtues of not wearing pants, they rip on Twilight a little bit more and lay down a Fat Guy Five about the most anticipated movies of December. Then it’s the DVD Round-Up before they say good-bye for another week.

Episode 240 – Sex Ed From Someone Famous

Posted on November 23, 2011

This Week: Getting set for Thanksgiving week, Kevin decides to keep everything in the family this week… including the guests of the show. So he invites his sons Liam (age 10 years old) and Ben (age 8 years old) to give the kids’ perspective on all the family movies out this week. They chat about Arthur Christmas, Hugo and all things Muppets, both new and old. Then they send Ben to bed before tackling box office predictions and learning a little about puberty. Sanity returns at the end of the middle segment with the Fat Guy Five: Five Favorite Muppet Moments. Then it’s the DVD Round-Up, and they send you away with a message of Thanksgiving. (Not really… they forgot the Thanksgiving message, but it probably would have been food-related, anyway.)

Episode 239 – That’s Grosser Than Anything I Could Have Said

Posted on November 17, 2011

This Week: In order to combat the estrogen explosion in the movie theaters this weekend with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I, Kevin invites Dame Elisabeth Rappe into the Magical Studio in the Sky for the female perspective. However, she’s not a fan, and they end up dissecting the movie with more precision than Edward’s vampires teeth on Bella’s uterus. They also break down Happy Feet Two and examine whether cute penguins and snappy dance numbers can actually make a good movie (spoiler alert… they can’t). Then they respond to a listener voice mail and lay down a Fat Guy Five about movie birth scenes, and not in the good way.

Episode 238 – King Kong vs. Dirk Diggler

Posted on November 10, 2011

This Week: Inspired by last week’s new movie A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, Kevin invites Ike from the It’s Mike and Ike podcast into the Magical Studio in the Sky. They start off with no rehearsal, much to the chagrin of Brett Ratner. They take some pot shots at the new movies, including J. Edgar and Immortals, but nothing compares to Ike’s rage-fueled rant about Jack and Jill. Kevin and Ike continue into the highly offensive middle segment where they suggest how to make an Oscar ceremony worth watching. Then they lay down an impromptu Fat Guy Five about the best racist characters in cinema history. Finally, they wrap things up with the DVD Round-Up and send the listeners on their merry way.

Episode 237 – Against a Pinball Machine

Posted on November 3, 2011

This Week: Kevin rings in the holiday season by inviting Dr. Cole Abaius into the Magical Studio in the Sky. They chat about the relative worth of Brett Ratner versus Errol Morris. Then they celebrate an early Christmas with Harold and Kumar. But that’s not before Dr. Abaius offends the Wyoming listening audience with references to The Accused and other sundry films. They also chat about haunted houses, wild box office guesses and entertaining Eddie Murphy movies. They also share some listener feedback before heading into the DVD Rundown and wrap up the show.

Episode 236 – The Alien Had Boobies

Posted on October 27, 2011

This Week: Even though it’s Halloween weekend, Hollywood has moved on to a period piece, sci-fi action and children’s fare. Kevin invites Jim Napier from GeekTyrant and Napier’s News to join him to talk about the films bridging the gap between Halloween and the holiday season. They contemplate fractured fairy tales, Justin Timberlake’s acting ability and whether Shakespeare should have blown up more shit in his plays. Then they hit the middle segment to talk box office, key news items and lay down a Fat Guy Five about spin-offs. Finally, it’s the DVD Rundown and a ghoulish exit… though not really.

Episode 235 – Probe’s a Great Game

Posted on October 20, 2011

This Week: Kevin continues a month of Halloween celebrations by inviting horror fan Fozzie Bare back into the Magical Studio in the Sky. They debate the merits of the Paranormal Activity series, looking ahead to the new film. They also talk British humor and French adventures with Johnny English Reborn and The Three Musketeers. In the infamous middle segment, Kevin talks about the Shock Around the Clock horror marathon and A Serbian Film. Then they lay down a Fat Guy Five about awesome horror sequels before giving some DVD recommendations and sending you back out into the cold to trick or treat.

Episode 234 – Oh, I Know What Furries Are

Posted on October 13, 2011

This Week: Kevin celebrates the mid-month of Halloween by inviting newly-appointed FSR Editor-at-Large and resident horror movie fan Robert Fure into the Magical Studio in the Sky. There, they kick off their Sunday shoes and cut Footloose before making non-educated guesses about The Big Year. Then, Fure gives us the low-down on the new horror flick The Thing, after which Kevin takes a look at Lucky McKee’s The Woman and the new gross-out flick Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence). During the relatively clean middle segment, we get a Fat Guy Five about snowy films before rattling off some DVD recommendations. But Fure doesn’t disappoint his raunchy fan base because he looks up some great names for potential web sites.

Episode 233 – Diego and the Donkey Show

Posted on October 6, 2011

This Week: Kevin takes a hint from Gerard Butler in the new film Machine Gun Preacher and he finds a man of God to join him in the Magical Studio in the Sky this week. That man of God is Reverend Scott, a frequent guest on the Outside the Cinema podcast. He’s not a great man of God, but he’s got a picture of Cheech Marin with a shotgun on his Twitter avatar, so that’s gotta count for something. Reverend Scott preaches to Kevin about giant boxing robots in Real Steel, politics as usual in The Ides of March and why he’s so much cooler than Gerard Butler in that preacher film. Oh, and there’s some pretty offensive stuff in the third segment. Sins abound!
