Gods of Egypt
Rated PG-13
Studio: LIonsgate
Formats available: 3D BD, BD, DVD, VOD
Though overdone with CGI and starring B-level actors, this is a fun and silly look at Egyptian mythology in a Clash of the Titans sort of way.

TOP PICK

The Good Dinosaur
Rated PG
Studio: Pixar
Formats available: 3D BD, BD, DVD, VOD
This charming Pixar movie got a bit of a bum rap from critics this past fall for not being as Pixar as other studio releases, but it’s still a sweet tale of a dinosaur in an alternate history who befriends a feral child and together must find their way home. Bonus features include commentary, deleted scenes, new animated bits with the characters from the film as well as several behind-the-scenes featurettes about the production of of the film and working at Pixar.

Bridge of Spies
Rated PG-13

Steve Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated film about the negotiation for a prisoner exchange during the Cold War is a slow burn but very effectively done, featuring some fantastic performances by Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance. If you missed this one in theaters, it’s very much worth checking out in your home cinema. Special features include behind-the-scenes featurettes about the Cold War and the effects of the U-2 plane crash.

Straight Outta Compton

This biopic of the rap group NWA runs a bit long, but it’s still a well-made flick, juggling multiple characters and connecting with a fan base that transcends racial demographics.

Sicario
Rated R

Bone Tomahawk
Not Rated
Studio: Image Entertainment
Formats available: BD, DVD, VOD
A brilliant horror western featuring Kurt Russell as a sheriff leading a posse to find a kidnapped wife. They face a dangerous cannibal tribe, making this the go-to cannibal movie of 2015 (instead of The Green Inferno).

Pan
Rated PG
Studio: Warner Bros.
Formats available: BD, DVD, VOD
Even though it did not do well in theatrical release, Pan is a fun and adventurous origin story for Peter Pan. Enjoy striking visuals and some fun (though some painfully over-the-top) performances. Bonus features include a commentary track, plus four featurettes: “Never Grow Up: The Legend of Pan,” “The Boy Who Would Be Pan,” “The Scoundrels of Neverland” and “Wonderous Realms.”

Ant-Man
Rated PG-13
Studio: Marvel
Formats available: 3D BD, BD, DVD, VOD
Easily the best Marvel movie of 2015, returning to the fun nature of the origin stories for lesser-known characters. Check it out in 3D for at-home viewing for an immersive experience and the best format for the shrinking effects. Bonus materials include oodles of behind-the-scenes featurettes, plus deleted scenes and audio commentary.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition
Rated R
Studio: Warner Bros.
Formats available: 3D BD, BD, DVD, VOD
The extended version of the third Hobbit movie features 20 minutes of new footage, much of it R-rated battle scenes with plenty of blood and gore (though the rest of the movie appears unaltered in violence). Also worthwhile for the nine and a half hours of appendices to complete the Jackson extended edition experience.

Terminator: Genisys
Rated PG-13
Studio: Paramount
Formats available: 3D BD, BD, DVD, VOD
The latest installment in the Terminator franchise revives the series with a return of Arnold Schwarzenegger and revamping Kyle Reese and Sarah Conner. More time travel makes the movie a little convoluted, and the presence of Jai Courtney isn’t a plus, but it’s still an enjoyable movie.
