The 10 Best Films of 2013

I have to admit that I was a bit worried as 2013 wound down. While there were plenty of movies I enjoyed, there were few that screamed to be put on my Best of the Year list. Fortunately, as seems to happen every year, there were a handful that came through at the end of the year during the furious race of award season that made the grade. Still, this list seems rather lopsided to me, with half of the films being science fiction in nature. In a way, this is one of the more mainstream lists I’ve made in recent years, but there are a few artsy gems in there as well. The biggest surprise for me: no animated films. That was bound to happen one of these days. Anyway, on to my ten favorite of 2013…

Episode 336 – Squat on a Rocket

This Week: Kevin comes out with strong support for pornography, leaving Kristin hanging her head in shame. They also talk about Rush, which is not about the band or the conservative talk show host. Kevin’s favorite subject of food comes up again for the adorable Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and that second-favorite subject comes up with Don Jon. There’s also more eye rolling at Baggage Claim, with some love for the token white guy. Finally, Kevin and Kristin talk about box office and home video releases before sending you on your merry way.

Episode 315 – Neutering the Film Industry

This Week: Kristin escapes from the Magical Studio in the Sky for a quick vacation to a place where she has to get vaccinations and bug-resistant clothing. Meanwhile, Kevin invites his New to Netflix co-host Nicholas Herum to fill Kristin’s shoes. And my, does he look funny in those high heels. This week, there’s not many releases, but the two fat guys manage to find plenty to say about exhibitors calling for more PG-13 movies and fewer R-rated movies, as well as the new film of the week: Iron Man 3. Later, they answer a listener voice mail about Joss Whedon and filmmaker fandom before rattling off some DVD suggestions and heading off into the sunset.
