On This Episode: For the third installment of the Marathon Chat, Fat Guy Kevin Carr and Shock Around the Clock master of scaremonies Joe Neff slow things down and talk about some marathon memories. Of course, this isn’t before Kevin takes a caustic turn by launching hate and bile at talk show hosts Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel as well as box office sleazemonger Nikki Finke. Eventually, they go through the long-form history of the brilliant short film Gravity at the marathons, as well as Kevin S. O’Brien’s witty Bread series. There might also be some NSFW discussions of classic (and offensive) selections showed at the edgiest Schlock-Around-the-Clock marathons of yesteryear.

They look ahead to March 15 and March 16 during which science fiction fans will spend one spin of the planet together at the Drexel Theater in Bexley, Ohio, watching 24 hours of science fiction movies. They discuss some past pitfalls that will be avoided, which formats the films will be shown in, concession information and also announce the date for the upcoming 24-Hour Horror Movie Martahon in October. The 10 Best Films of 2013

I have to admit that I was a bit worried as 2013 wound down. While there were plenty of movies I enjoyed, there were few that screamed to be put on my Best of the Year list. Fortunately, as seems to happen every year, there were a handful that came through at the end of the year during the furious race of award season that made the grade. Still, this list seems rather lopsided to me, with half of the films being science fiction in nature. In a way, this is one of the more mainstream lists I’ve made in recent years, but there are a few artsy gems in there as well. The biggest surprise for me: no animated films. That was bound to happen one of these days. Anyway, on to my ten favorite of 2013…

The BFCA Announces Nominess for the 19th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards

On December 16, the Broadcast Film Critics Associate announced its nominees for the 19th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards.

americanhustle“12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle” both received 13 nonminations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director.

This year’s awards include nominations from specialized categories, including Best Animated Feature, Best Action Movie, Best Comedy and Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film.

The 19th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards will air on the CW at 8pm on Thursday, January 16. Aisha Tyler will host the event.

Kristin and he answer a listener voice mail about Breaking Bad (even though neither watches the show), then they move on to the big movie news and raise their glasses to the recently deceased Tom Clancy. Then it’s on to the movie reviews, which includes Gravity, Runner Runner and Dario Argento’s Bat-shit Crazy Dracula. Finally, they give some box office predictions and talk about the new movies available on disc. Boo!
