This Week: Kevin takes a moment at the top of the show to talk about the impact of the Charlie Hebdo attack and what it means to have freedom of expression. New movies this week include Taken 3, Inherent Vice and Selma, as well as a new Listener Recommendation feature where he looks at Blue Ruin. In the final segment, Kevin breaks down why Hollywood saw a drop in revenue of 5% in 2014 and also why some theaters might be worried for a different reason. Episode 402 – Black James Bond

fatguysatthemovies2_banner

This Week: Kevin rings in the new year with some new news that’s really old news. This would be the hubbub about a potential black James Bond. Kevin also analyzes what the high-grossing VOD numbers mean for The Interview as well as VOD potential in general. Then, he rattles through some early-year trailers and heads into the movie reviews. New films reviewed include The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, [REC]4: Apocalypse, A Most Violent Year and a better-late-than-never review of The Interview. Later in the show, Kevin gives a tease of his 10 Best and 10 Worst Films of 2014 before offering some box office mojo and the world-famous (but very thin) DVD Round-Up! Happy 2015!

The 10 Worst Films of 2014

BY KEVIN CARR

One of my favorite things to do at the end of the year is to hurl my venom at the worst movies I’ve been forced to watch for the last twelve months. Sure, everyone likes good films, but it’s turning the screws to the life-sucking, waste-of-space movies that really makes things fun. In 2014, we have seen an unfortunate return of the dreaded found-footage movie (though fortunately, few of these made any significant profit this year). There’s also some sequels in the mix that lived down (or below) the originals. It wasn’t a banner year for bad films, per se, but there was no shortage of them (and Tyler Perry only made it to the dishonorable mentions this year, which is nice).

The 10 Best Films of 2014

BY KEVIN CARR

The releases of 2014 have been a rocky road. When many of them were announced, they were like a kindergarten class of inspiring kids with plenty of ambition and potential. However, as the films matured to release date, we were left in a sea of mediocrity. Films that could have been fantastic blockbusters – like “Godzilla,” “Maleficent” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” – were fraught with problems, making them forgettable at best. Even the end-of-the-year award slate offerings – including “Big Eyes,” “Into the Woods” and “Unbroken” – had such promise but ended up being uninspiring.

Still, in the batch of releases throughout the years, there were some stellar movies to highlight. Like my best-of lists of previous years, I demonstrate my soft spot for animation, and I am happy to see a nice mixture of award-bait movies and blockbuster tent-poles, and even a few lesser-known films that missed out on others’ lists. Anyway, on to my ten favorite of 2014…

Episode 401 – The Big Fat Christmas Special 2014

fatguysatthemovies2_banner

This Week: Because Kevin was so incensed by the actions of Sony and North Korea last week, he couldn’t enjoy any Christmas spirit. So, since it’s still technically Christmas weekend, he’s celebrating with all of you, as if you were his estranged in-laws. After talking more about Sony, the President and North Korea, Kevin talks some more movie news before looking at the trailers for some March releases. Then, he reviews Into the Woods, Big Eyes, Unbroken, The Gambler and Two Days, One Night. Later, he looks at the box office and rolls into the world-famous DVD Round-Up so you can spend your holiday gift cards. Messy Kweznuz!
