Idiot Boxers Review: Flashpoint, Ep: 404

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers
Show: Flashpoint
Airs: CBS, Fridays, 8pm
Episode: “Terror”
Review: Boy, when Flashpoint wants to pull out all the stops, it pulls out all the stops. If memory serves correct, this is the first time we got to see the side of policing that is known but never appreciated on the show. The side where a police officer, despite having the day off and not being required to call to action, still goes into a major hostile situation throwing hesitation to the wind.
I personally would of preferred if the unarmed Jules was stuck in that situation throughout the entire episode, but then again if that was the case we wouldn’t have gotten the amazing ending that we did, and that’s where this episode shines the most.
Like Lew’s death, the neo-nazi bomb going off at the immigration center, the innocent kid being shot and killed by the drug dealer, this was one of those endings you don’t see coming. Sure, we all now our beloved Team One will be okay, but could anyone honestly say they were expecting the chemical bomb to actually be set off? The answer is no.
Sometimes it helps that the show is Canadian from a political standpoint, because there is no way an American produced show would ever get that scene past the writers room. Sometimes these subjects can’t be talked down, no matter how much we would like them to be. It’s an element that is only addressed once or twice a season, but it’s an element we should never forget about.
Especially now, terrorism is a hot button topic on both sides of the border. While at times it feels like shows of Flashpoint‘s type are trying to force moral messages upon the audience, Flashpoint always seems to find a way to get around the smell of forced writing. It probably has to do with the nature of the SRU’s position in the Toronto police force. This is the kind of job people would expect them to do anyway, so it works.
Final thoughts: A strong episode, and probably the most shocking one of the season so far.
What’s next: Team One works with Det. Mary Danner of Financial Crimes to bring down two individuals involved in mass credit card fraud.
