Idiot Boxers Review: Flashpoint, Ep: 3.06

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers

Show: Flashpoint
Airs: CBS, Fridays, 9pm
Episode: “Behind The Blue Line”

Episode synopsis: An active shooter takes over a condemned hockey stadium and it’s up to the SRU to stop him.

Major developments: This is the first episode where Sam truly feels the effects of a bad call… That’s the only development.

What rocked: Everything. Everything rocked this episode. First off, you have the opening of the episode, the entire team rushes into HQ and Parker is just all sorts of pissed. O, and Sam is covered in blood, it just hits you like a bullet.

Then there’s the pacing, the episode was so quick, and so clean. Really a compliment to the writers on this one. A stand out episode like this starts at the script stage, and boy did they pull out all the stops. This is where the “action” part of the genre the show exists in really comes into play. It was so beautiful to watch, even on the small screen.

As for the characters, seeing Sam break down the way he did after the incident was over, it really was heart breaking. The one time he has a connection, and has a chance to end a situation peacefully, ends in absolute tragedy. Then, the way the team trys to show him the error of his ways but has such a hard time doing so because they understand his grief, it was so moving.

But where the episode really delivers is on the tension. The baddy is equipped with some really heavy weaponry and he knows how to use it. Every time there is a commercial break, is when the team is in absolute peril, and the entire team is hardly ever in peril all at the same time. The amount of twists and turns the episodes took was quite refreshing.

What sucked: I have one gripe, and it isn’t with the show, it’s with CBS. This show is produced by CTV and this entire season has aired in Canada already. This episode, was the season finale of what aired in Canada. That is why the episode was so good, it was for the finale. So I worry about continuity now. I really hate when networks do this.

Final thoughts: An absolutely stunning episode of Flashpoint (yes, I know I say that a lot).

What’s next: No idea…
