Idiot Boxers Review: Royal Pains, Season Two Premiere

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers
Show: Royal Pains
Airs: USA, Thursdays, 10pm
Episodes: Season Two Premiere
Last year, USA gave us a show that I like to call, House lite. The show is actually called Royal Pains. It revolves around the character of Hank Lawson who, after being fired from his position as an ER doctor in New York City, is dragged out to the Long Island haven, The Hamptons. There he is thrust into a new position, concierge doctor for The Hamptons.
At the end of last season, Hank Med is bankrupt thanks to Hank’s father Eddie tricking Evan, Divya was engaged and Jank was split. So this season begins with the brothers’ relationship in disarray and Divya’s (their Physician Assistant) future in The Hamptons uncertain. We join Hank heading to New York City to get Evan back. We learn quickly that Evan is trying to get the companies money back from his father. After that fails he rejoins the rest of the team and the episode’s story begins.
Instead of treading into familiar territory with a patient we might now from the last season, this season begins with a brand new guy, a TV infomercial sales man who is experiencing mundane symptoms. That is, if you call nailing your hand to the wall with a nail gun and throwing you back out inside a chimney mundane. Considering the extremely funny nature of this character, I don’t think this is the last we’ll see of him.
SPOILER
The entire episode revolves around Hank and Evan fixing their relationship. Through the magic of TV they do in a nice sixty minutes. But the best moment comes from the final minutes. After everything has been worked out, and Evan has sold the thing he holds most dear, they walk back into their house to see none other than their father at the pool table. Did I mention their father is Henry Winkler?! After a speechless greeting, Eddie hands the boys a check for all the money he stole, at which point Hank clock in father right in the face.
END OF SPOILER
After that, I have a feeling the theme for this season is going to be, fixer upper. We will see Eddie try to “fix” his relationship with his sons’, Hank will try and fix his relationship with Jill and Divya will try to fix, herself. This premiere worked on its own merit but, really took it up a notch with the final frame. I can’t wait to see what the rest of season two has in store.
