Idiot Boxers Review: Memphis Beat, Ep: 1.01

Show: Memphis Beat
Airs: TNT, Tuesdays, 10pm
Episode: “That’s All Right, Mama”

Series synopsis: Memphis Beat is a modern day western set in the city of well, Memphis. Detective Dwight Hendricks (Jason Lee) is homicides hot head and has his own way of doing police work.

Major developments: At the start of the series the unit gets a new boss who immediately takes issue with Hendricks methods. We also get to meet some of the other team most notably, Davey Sutton played by DJ Qualls.

What rocked: I’ve always said what makes a good procedural is character. Lee brings his A game to this series. He is great to watch. The same goes for Qualls (despite his minimal screen time). I never thought Lee could ever be convincing in “down to earth” roles that didn’t involve discussions about the female crave for deep dicking or constant qualms with karma and porno mustaches but, he really makes Memphis Beat worth watching.

What sucked: That said, the show has a host of problems that need to be corrected to keep me interested. First of all, I really, really hate the new boss Lt. Tanya Rice. She just bores me to tears and her accent and “I can tell you what to do” attitude is really annoying. Also, the pilots crime of the week story was really weak. I won’t say what happened but, they could of done a lot better. Especially on a network that claims to “know drama.”

Final thoughts: Memphis Beat has real potential but really needs to work out its kinks before I can put on the level of Justified as far as modern day western procedurals go.

What’s next: Supposedly, we will be delving much deeper into Dwight’s personal life.
