Idiot Boxers Review: Glee, Season 1 Finale

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers

Show: Glee
Airs: FOX, Tuesdays, 9pm
Episode: Season 1 Finale

Every TV season brings new ideas and fresh characters to the table. Sometimes, those ideas work out in a way that no one expects. This season, that idea came in the form of a one hour musical/comedy show called Glee.

The first season of Glee was full of many one dimensional characters that, though basic, were extremely fun to watch. The show also brought basic story lines that managed to keep the audience interested. But the season finale reminded us why we watch the show. It isn’t for the characters, or the story… It’s for the performance.

Almost all the actors on Glee come from a professional musical theater background. Some have even been on Broadway. So, that probably explains why the performances from this episode were so fantastic. Everyone was in their element because the story of the show took them to the stage of regionals, the performers’ natural environment. We saw the same thing happen on the mid-season break with sectionals.

What was also nice to see, was that the show didn’t make us wait for the teams performances this time around. They get their set done in the first 15 minutes of the episode, leaving room for the rival team to show off. We also got a conclusion to the baby storyline. We saw growth in many of the characters by episodes end and while there isn’t much of a cliffhanger, the show still managed to make me want to tune in for next season.

Here is where the ass in me creeps in. Part of Glee’s success comes from the fact that the show was something fresh. There hasn’t been an extremely popular (or any for that matter) musical show on TV since the days of Fame. This show, is Fame for the new generation. But, regardless of the fact that it’s already been signed for two more seasons, I don’t know how much staying power the show really has. But you can bet your ass I’ll be tuning in this fall just to see what songs get the show choir treatment that week.

Glee is here to stay people, the only question is, can they keep up their pace?
