Idiot Boxers Review: Flashpoint, Ep: 3.04

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers

Show: Flashpoint
Airs: CBS, Fridays, 9pm
Episode: “Custody”

Episode synopsis: While trying to resolve a hostage situation, the SRU team learns there is much more than just the hostage at stake.

Major developments: The concept of Parker’s child is reintroduced, hopefully this will lead into other story lines throughout the season. This is also the first episode where we are finally learn some things about the new team member. Everything from a bad scar on her shoulder to her defiant attitude on one of Ed’s orders. It was nice to finally see her get some screen time, she even serves a crucial role in the last fifteen minutes.

What rocked: I know I am always gushing about this series but, this episode was award worthy. It is rare when the actors playing the one off characters in a police procedural actually give note worthy performances. Everyone from the ticked off husband who takes his ex-wife’s lawyer hostage, to the random neighbor next door were great and really felt like they added something to the episode.

Also, as far as story telling goes, this was some of the best writing we have seen from this series since season one. A lot of twists that keep you guessing as to who the real bad guy is, only in the end to learn that there is no real bad guy here. Everyone truly believes they are doing what is right.

What sucked: The only real complaint, if you could call it that, is that the show is starting to move away from its non-linear style openings where we see the situation already in progress then jump back to it’s cause. Instead, we start on the SRU and then episode uses CSI style flashbacks to explain the lead up. Not the best option but it works, as long as this isn’t a regular thing.

Final thoughts: Even though the death of Lou was the best moment of the season, this was the best overall episode so far. Excellent writing, acting, editing, pacing, action it was all top notch.

What’s next: The SRU team must rescue a politician who has been taken hostage by a local disc jockey.
