Idiot Boxers Review: Burn Notice, Season Four Premiere

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers
Show: Burn Notice
Airs: USA, Thursdays, 9pm
Episodes: Season Four Premiere
When we last left our favorite burned spy Michael Weston, he was locked in a room with no knowledge of where he is and, what he’s doing there. We rejoin him in the exact same place at the start of the fourth season of Burn Notice. He begins to go on his usual narration about the room, the people he is dealing with, etc… Then enters a man that will simply be known as Vaughn, Vaughn works for management which leads us right into the “twist.” I won’t say what it is, but it does shed light on the whole “Management” thing.
Moving past that, the show gets into its first major action sequence. I will only say that it involves the jungle, automatic weapons and an unmanned predator drone… Let me say that again, AN UNMANNED PREDATOR DRONE!!! And that’s all BEFORE the title screen pops up.
After all that fuss, we see Michael rejoin his friends and family and, immediately is thrown into a new case with good ol’e Sam and Fiona. This one involves a major Miami biker gang and a lawyer just trying to do the right thing. The best moment comes when Sam and Fiona are fighting and Michael goes “Guys, guys, I am sitting here with a Mac 10 in my hand and I have no idea what I am doing!” I think that pretty much sums it up.
The episode then goes on it usual twists’ and turns’ for the next 30 minutes of air time. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Sam calls his buddies, Fiona gets into some hot water, Michael and Sam get into a fight, car/motorcycle chase, etc… It’s all what makes Burn Notice such a great show to watch.
However, the story arch begins after all of this ends. In the last ten minutes Michael does something that will shape the entire season. Vaughn has “recruited” Michael to help against a new type of enemy (no, not aliens or any mystical beings for that matter), this enemy is very real and very bad. So while trying to get some information, Michael accidently causes another… That is all I am going to say. This arc is guaranteed to, at the very least, run the entire first half of the season this summer and might very while lead into the winter run.
Overall, this is Burn Notice at its best, witty, funny, actiony, smart and everything in between. This season is sure to take Michael into some dark places with the set up we got tonight but, be sure to see plenty of light hearted gun fights along the way. Burn Notice, one again, proves why it’s the show to watch this summer.
