Idiot Boxers Review: House, Season Six Finale

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers
Show: House
Airs: FOX, Mondays, 8pm
Episodes: Season Six Finale
This season of House has been one heck of a ride. We started the season with House finally beating his addiction, and we have watched as he has begun the transformation into a decent (or as close as he can get) human being. He moves in with Wilson, he is trying to make a lasting relationship with his co-workers, and he has finally begun to pursue his hidden love for Cuddy. That all changed by the final minutes of season 6.
What we saw in the finale of season 6 was a House that has grown tired of trying and failing at every aspect of normal life. After going through hell in back to save a patient he has found confidence in, she dies. The 7 minutes that follow her death are some of the most powerful moments of the entire series, causing this reviewer to tear up, just a little bit.
We see House realize that no matter what he does, he can never guarantee success. It is no clearer than when he screams at Forman “I did everything right and it didn’t matter!” We saw House realize he is just human, and human beings have no power to control who lives and who dies.
Not to give anything anyway, but what happens in the final 30 seconds of the finale, is what we all have been waiting for, for a very, very long time. What also made this finale great was the fact that it was about House. No side stories from Taub, Chase, or Forman. We got a bit of a teaser for next season in terms of Thirteen’s character, but that’s it. This episode never took its focus off House. Some might argue that this episode was also about Cuddy but, everything Cuddy does in this episode happens in the presence of House and affects him personally.
I wish I could say more, but I want the episode to do that. If you haven’t watched the finale yet, stop reading this and do it now! The season 6 finale was emotionally gripping, and hit every note with perfect pitch. I cannot wait to see what season 7 holds.
