Idiot Boxers Review: FlashForward Finale

When the 2009-2010 TV season began, the big question over at ABC was, what show will be the new LOST? It came down to two, V and FlashForward. It’s a shame that V ended up with the LOST lead in, because, FlashForward is without a doubt, the better show. It proved that no better than in the season/series finale of season one.
The entire second half of the first season has had one objective, find out when the next back out was coming. For those wondering, yes we do learn when the next black out is coming, and yes it’s probably happening exactly when you thought it was. This episode in particular, really got into the mythology of the series. Can the future be changed, can the black outs be re-created, is the universe on a correction course, it all came to a head in the finale.
If there is one thing the finale definitely delivered on, it was tension, especially at the thirty minute mark. Once we start the whole, terrorist invade the FBI story line, everything starts going down. Wedeck and Vreede finally get some well deserved bad ass moments for one, especially Wedeck who decides to play on his flash forward.
Another great aspect of this finale was what happens between Simon and Dimetri who have gone to NLAP to get a file that will expose everyone involved in the conspiracy. However, those people are already accessing the machine that lead to something very… well, you know.
Then of course there is Mark’s vision. Everything Mark had seen finally came to a pass. When this very angry man gets a hold of a shot gun, he just starts going to town on all the baddies. All of it leads to an explosive (literally) cliff hanger.
Unfortunately that is what is wrong with the finale, it ends on a major, major cliffhanger. I say unfortunately because, for those who haven’t heard, FlashForward has not been picked up for a second season. But as cliffhangers go, it is one of the best.

The cliffhanger ends with the entire world experiencing another black out at 10:14pm PST. But this black out is very different from the last because this time, everyone doesn’t see the same date. We realize that people are seeing things from 2010, 2011 and 2015. No one is seeing the same moment in time. This is even more interesting when we see a vision of a grown up Charlie saying “they found him.” We are led to assume she means her father Mark because the very last shot of the episode is the FBI building blowing with, with it inconclusive if Mark got out in time.

Over all the FlashForward finale works… as a season finale. But it certainly doesn’t as a series finale. So many things are left unanswered and that is perhaps the biggest conspiracy of all. Good bye FlashForward, you left us too soon.
