Idiot Boxers Review: Human Target, Season 1

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers

Show: Human Target
Airs: FOX, Wednesdays, 8pm
Episodes: Season One

With LOST coming to an end ABC has been trying to find replacements for it, in such shows as FlashForward and V. Well, it seems like FOX is doing the same thing now that 24 is coming to an end, except they are putting all their faith into one program, Human Target. If I could some up the now finished first season of Human Target I would call it a cross between 24 and Burn Notice.

The main character of the show is a guy name Christopher Chance (well that’s one of his many names anyway). Chance is the perfect soldier. The Michael Weston of our t… O, wait. But in all seriousness he is a cool dude, a very likeable main character with a very sketchy past. Chance runs a mercenary group with his partners Winston and Guerrero. Winston is a tough skinned former cop who realized he could do more acting outside the red tape of the law and Guerrero is well, Guerrero.

Actually, Guerrero is probably the most interesting character of the entire series, since there are times when his loyalty comes into question but, they’re quickly brought right back into place. The character is played by Hollywood’s most recent comeback boy Jackie Earle Haley. This worries me because Haley’s movie career is thriving in hits like Watchmen, Shutter Island, and (at least what I predict will be a hit) Nightmare on Elm Street, he might decide to leave the series thus ending the run of the very intriguing character.

As for the show itself, like I said it’s 24 and Burn Notice thrown into a blender. Chance helps people for any price while working out his own past (ala Burn Notice). But there are also many different conspiracy elements occurring throughout the show (ala 24). Each episode is like a mini action movie every week. Lots of high octane action set pieces that will make the average viewer very happy.

In case you’re wondering, no, this show never takes itself too seriously. Hell, it NEVER takes itself seriously. That is why it works so well. It’s a whole lotta couch potato fun, a perfect show for 8pm on Wednesday nights.

Overall, FOX made the right move by making this there new hit action series to replace 24. Now that the first season has come to a close it should hit the DVD shelves fairly soon. So be on the look out and get caught up before season 2 begins, because there is a lot of cool back story to be had. Not to mention that this season ends on a really cool cliffhanger. Human Target is a must watch from this point forward.
