The Idiot Boxers Review: Sons of Tucson, Ep. 1-3

TV review by Merrill Barr, co-host of The Idiot Boxers

Show: Sons of Tucson
Airs: FOX, Sundays, 9:30/8:30
Episode: Season One, Episodes 1 through 3

For years FOX’s Sunday night prime time slots have been dominated by nothing but animation. Well, apparently FOX is finally willing to take a risk with the new show Sons of Tucson which now follows Family Guy at 9:30 on Sunday nights.

The story of Sons of Tucson centers on The Gunderson Brothers. 3 homeless boys who are traveling to a vacation home their now prison laden father owns. In order to enroll in school the boys must hire someone to be their “dad,” of course this eventually becomes a full time gig. If you’re hearing the theme song to Malcolm in the Middle in your head, you should. One of the series executive producer’s is Justin Berfield aka Reese from the acclaimed show. Much like Malcolm, Sons of Tucson has that same charm. The idea that no matter how bad these boys are to Ron, or each other they are all still a family, comes through loud and clear.

As for the quality of the show so far, it’s very good. Funny and smart, which is all that is asked from it. The show has yet to introduce any permanent supporting characters but, all of the current guest characters that have appeared the 3 currently aired episodes have been spot on. The chemistry is certainly there between all the cast members especially the boys, I fully by these kids as brothers.

As for Tyler Labine who plays Ron, he is very, very funny. Ron is the classic destitute male who lives out of his car. That car is quickly replaced by a shack that the brothers let him live in instead of the actual house. If you were a fan of Labine as sock on the now defunct Reaper, then you will really dig him in Sons of Tucson, as he just playing a more extreme version of that character.

Overall, Sons of Tucson has started of great with its first 3 episodes. It will be interesting to see where they take the series as the kids get older. One of the biggest problems Malcolm in the Middle always faced was that the kids were growing up and once they were all adults you really couldn’t do anything else with them. I have a feeling this show will eventually end the same way (assuming it doesn’t get cancelled first), but let’s enjoy this nice break from “animation domination” for as long as we can.
